Shale bedrock exposed in the bottom of a large rill on an artificial badland slope in Virginia (USA). Erosion of the shale is detachment-limited. This picture was taken during the summer. During the winter the rill is partially filled with colluvial sediment from the surrounding slopes which is rapidly removed when the spring and summer storms begin.
