This diagram shows the combined effects of variation in sediment supply and flow rate (transport stage) upon bed erosion rates, showing a postulated humped relationship. In my view the hump probably should be skewed towards the upper part of the diagram, because the transition from relatively sediment-free bed to full alluvial bed probably occurs abruptly as sediment load increases. In addition, most bedrock channel bottoms are not flat, so that erosion of bed protuberances and boulders on the channel bed will continue into the regime (to the right of the figure) where most sediment is in suspension.
