The top diagram (a) is a repeat of the previous one, showing floodplain age. Howard (1991 and 1996) introduced a heuristic model for deposition on floodplains in which the rate of deposition decreases as the floodplain height increases (due to decreased frequency and depth of flooding) and with distance from the presently active channel (due to less sediment diffusing to more remote portions of the floodplain). Illustration (b) shows the simulated topography of a floodplain. Note that the point bars in the interior of bends are low, as is observed in natural channels, as are recently created oxbow cutoffs. Illustration (c) shows the floodplain elevation for a less rapid sedimentation rate than in (b)
