Notes:
This illustration shows the simulated evolution of meander bends, starting from a nearly straight channel. Simulated flow in the channels uses the linear model of Johannesson and Parker (Johanneson, J. and Parker, G., 1989, Linear theory of river meanders. In: River meandering, S. Ikeda and G. Parker, eds, Water Resources Mon. 12, Am. Geophys. Union, 181-214). The rate of bank erosion is assumed to be proportional to the flow velocity perturbation near the outer bank of the flow (defined as the difference between the near-bank and average downstream flow velocity divided by the average flow velocity). Cutoffs occur when the channels physically intersect in neck cutoffs. Note that the final channel planform has a complicated shape with a pronounced tendency for upstream distortion of bends.
